What Is Departmental Support?

Our workshops and support services are designed to help your faculty to strategically design and write stronger research grants. Through half day, full day, and long-term support packages, we can help groups big and small master the art of grant writing for NIH.

With a variety of educational and hands-on support options for faculty at all levels, we’re not simply here to teach your people better grantsmanship; we’re here to help them develop a confident, sustainable grant-writing process for the long haul.

Available on Zoom or in person.

Our departmental support workshops and packages are ideal for departments/divisions that:

  • Are invested in supporting their junior faculty to find confidence and success in the grant writing process

  • Have a group of junior faculty who’ve been trying without success to write NIH grants, or who are brand new and want to make sure it gets done well

  • Have a group of mid-career faculty who’ve hit a plateau or who have not been successfully funded in a few rounds

  • Want to reduce the number of grant cycles and submissions required for their faculty to get funded

“Our philosophy is that we're here to clear the way for these scientists to do their best and most important work. Return on investment is the biggest benefit. We have started to see that use of specific resources and support programs pays dividends in the form of grants, papers, and promotions. ”

- Edge for Scholars Program (partner since 2019)

Half-day workshop (3 hours) High-Level Strategy Workshop

In our half-day workshop we provide an overview of key success strategies for research grants. Depending on your needs, you may choose from an overview of general grant writing success strategies or focus on high-level strategies for a specific component of an application (e.g., Aims page, Biosketch, Significance section).

The half-day workshop format includes 60 minutes of instruction followed by a short break, then participants will have an opportunity to practice implementing their new skill or rhetorical strategy in small breakout groups.

This workshop format can accommodate a maximum of 12 attendees.

Full-day workshop (6 hours)

Aims-in-a-Day Workshop

In our full-day workshop we guide your faculty to write a clear, persuasive draft of a Specific Aims page. We cover the overall strategic approach for the Aims page, as well as the structure for each section of the Aims page.

The full-day workshop format includes 45 minutes of instruction followed by a short break. Then we provide instruction for each of the four sections of the Aims page and provide time for participants to prepare a draft of each section. Finally, the instructor will review several of the draft aims pages in front of the group and provide feedback on clarity and persuasiveness.

This workshop format can accommodate a maximum of 12 attendees.
